The Ancient Acropolis of Methana

On the hill of Palaiokastro, near Vathi, there are the ruins of the Ancient Acropolis of Methana, with the well-preserved volcanic stone walls and the well-kept gate, which was built in the 4th to the 3rd centuries BC, from the time of the Peloponnesian War.

Archaeological findings show that the area was first inhabited since the Neolithic era (5,000 BC). The very few excavations that took place on the Acropolis of the ancient Methana brought to light also the fragments from Mycenaean vases.

Also visible ruins of ancient buildings are also preserved in the sea, from the sunken city of Methana, including the pier of the ancient harbor. Among the underwater ancient ruins, there are also Byzantine churches. According to archaeologists, the ancient city of Methana had about 700 homes.
